The literature review is the part of the ( paper ) where there is extensive reference to related research in your field; it is where connections are made between the source texts that you draw on, and where you position yourself and your own work amongst these sources ( Ridley, 2012, p. 2).

You need to appraise sources on the basis of Author-research or Source.

Question is how could you group your notes?

-Chronological (time): early to later studies

-Perspectives of authors: positions taken, ‘schools of thought’

-Method: how the research has been done

-Topical/Thematic: presented in sequence, like an essay

Two Key elements

1. The descriptive/reporting element-‘the catalogue’

What happened-describe

What the author has discussed, found, did an account of the topic

2. The interpretive/Critical element-‘the dialogue’

Asks and answers questions

Analyses, explains and interprets the information

Synthesises information to develop a point of view
